A few years back my cousin had his 454cid engine on Tom Earhart's dyno with a Merc Thunderbolt distributor. We added a Crane Hi 6M ignition box and made a few pulls to 5500rpm or so.......no difference in power, but a really nice feature that an ignition box can do for you is give a mulitple spark at idle speeds which keeps plugs from loading up/fouling out.
