As I said, I don't think you can be a tooth or 2 off on the chevy motor due to the design of the oil pump drive shaft. the Ford engines have an octagonal shaft that will allow the distributor to sit down in different positions if you aren't careful. The engine that broke because of that problem I spoke of earlier was a 302 Ford.
Turn the distributor by the base where the cap mounts, and you shouldn't have any problems.

I have those thick rubber valve cover gaskets so I am assuming I can reuse those. I have a set for the other engine if not. What am I looking for by removing the port side valve cover?

I was curious about the distributor being a tooth or 2 off by what you were saying and blowing the engine. If it will only go all the way down in 2 positions how can it be a tooth or 2 off? Thanks again. Knowledge is power and I need as much as possible. This boat ran 77 on radar before the installation of the new intakes. I was hoping that I could break 80 with the new intakes. Will I gain anything other than frustration with the installation of the new intakes?

Step 2
Turn the engine over by hand or by bumping the starter until you see the #1 intake rocker arm move up and then go back down. If then engine rotates a little further, the exaust rocker arm will start to move.
The timing mark on the harmonic balancer should then be very close to the 0* mark on the timing indicator tab. Rotate the engine by hand to get it exactly at the 0* mark.
This will put you at TDC for the #1 cylinder.

Does your dist cap have #'s 1 thru 8 for where each plug wire goes????
Also take the cap off the distributor if its not already.
What kind of distributor do you have???
I'll be back after dinner for the next step.

OK I completed your step #2 and yes my cap has the cylinder numbers on it. As far as the kind of distributor I dont know. I dont see on the receipt from the engine upgrade anything referring to a distributor so I guess it is stock. My coil looks like the regular merc round coils but it is made by somebody else. I will check it on my next trip to the boat for step #3.
