The motors in my boat started life as SC600's. They have hyd rollers and I spin them up to 6000 RPM's. No problem at all.

I was set to install a solid roller, but was talked out of it when I did my engine upgrade. Those were the reasons I was given, glad I listened.

Why is it that a soild roller needs to be adjusted so much?

Its the nature of a solid cam. If the lash isn't set just right, you'll wipe out the cam lobes, valves won't open all the way or won't close all the way.

There is absolutely no reason for you to use a solid roller on the engine you described.

They really do not if set up right. Once the lash is set and the setup is broken in the lash should not change much at all. If the lash is constantly changing then something is not set up right or wearing improperly. I ran a solid setup on a previous motor spun 6500rpms and never had to adjust the lash once it was broken in. I checked it a few times over the summer season. Solids due to their aggressive ramp rates and lobe profiles are pretty hard on the valvetrain compared to a hyd roller setup. I've moved back to a good Hyd roller setup with the new motor. Morel hyd roller lifters and RMBuilder custom cam. Set it and forget it and go boating.

I guess I should have clarified, you have to check the valve lash adjustment at least every 50hrs. It won't necessarily need adjusted.
