I have mine dumping into the top of the tank and no problems.
Not sure how close your pickup is to your dump tube. You might airiate the fuel at the pick up having a return tube near it.

Mine is returned to the filler tube as shown in the picture above. We were going to put it into one of the unused fittings in the top of the tank, but the plugs would not come out. We decided to not force them and go into the fill line.

My pick up tubes are about 5 - 6 " apart. Took the one tube out so fuel dumps in top of tank. Going out tomorrow, I see if it makes a difference in fuel pressure.

I thought the same thing, I bet with it entering the file tube its still areiated some,. also might be the same in ruff water shaking up the fuel? I know my Scarab tank had a wall in the middle,My Hustler file line and pick is in the rear of the tank
On my race cars with the return line just shooting in the top of the tank,its airated, the foam helps,most of the return lines or transfer pumps Ive looked at while running its airated also.
