Default Fuel water filters/flow direction

Does the fuel need to come in the threaded fitting in the middle where the filter screws on or does it come from the outside in.
I have an old set of Keith Eickert brackets for spin on filters and they are not marked with the in and out for the fuel lines.
Thanks,
Jim

I believe from the outside to the inside.
