Its normal. I usually try and belt sand the rear cover to help get a new surface, theres not much you can do with the inside of the housing besides order a new on that comes with an impeller. Someone was talking about a stainless insert to put into these pumps but I cant remember who it was.

Some light wear is normal, however if the gouges are deep enough it will damage the new impeller & it may not work at all.. The 496 pump housings dont seem to last as long as the older stuff did.. I liked the older ones with the replacable wear plates and rear housing.. then you had no worries..
