Question Alternator - Rebuild or Replace?

A question for the boys and girls.

I plan to pull both alternators (single pole) for testing, because I suspect one of them may be not working properly. (one of those pre-season checklist items I had). Any suggestions on whether a rebuild is possible, or, that I just need to get a replacment. (In which case I would take suggestions as to where).

Thanks.................Bob

I get mine rebuilt by a trusted starter and alternator rebuild shop. When I need a replacement I've gone to Arco. I just bought a starter from them and have in the past bought trim motor/pumps. Always had good luck personnally.

I have no problem with a rebuild if it is done properly.

I paid about $50 recently. Nothing specific was wrong with it. I just had them do a little prevative maintenance like bearings and voltage regulator. Kind of depends on what they find wrong.

BT........thanks........Yea, last run out in 2001 my portside engine started to run strange, until, I switched it to both batteries. I was wondering if the alternator was not keeping the battery properly charged. (I guess I could have just fired each engine up and checked for 13-14volts)......as you said, probably not a bad idea to do some preventative maint before the season starts.....again, thanks!!!
