I am rebuilding my 454 merc. engine. Here are the spects so far: Gen IV block .040 over, 9.5 : 1 comp. pistons (116cc heads), merc. cast oval port heads with std. valve sizes with three anlgle job and minor flow work, 7/16" rods std length and forged crank all ballanced with flyweel and fluid damp., Edelbrock performer RPM intake manifold and Paterson big tube headers with dry 4" exit pipes that mix water and exhaust at the tips. I want max runing power & rpm to be 5500. I can not afford a roller cam and liffters at this point. Could some of you marine engine experts PLEASE recomend a cam or custom cam spects to have one made from. If it helps it's going in a 24' 1992 BAJA with a bravo 1 drive. Thank in advice for all your help this board is the best I have seen yet.

Crane offers some very good flat-tappet hydraulic cams that many people on the board are using. If you post in the general section as well as this one you'll be able to get cam numbers and specs from these folks. I've been using some of the Federal Mogul cams that are offered in their hi-perf catalog but Crane has a much wider selection. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

The crane 741 cam will get you to 470hp @ 5200. You will find more power upstairs, but the hydraulic valve train becomes questionable at that point.

On the last two motors in the Baja, we have just called Tyler Crockett and he recommends a cam for the application.. They are custom grinds he gets made at CAM MOTION in louisana.. Dilvered to our door in a few days... both tappet and roller cam.. We have been impressed with the choices..

Whoda, this is KAAMA (I'm at JimV's shop and using his computer)...call Ultradyne Cams 662-349-4447 as FWK has suggested and ask for Tommy (sometimes you have to let the phone ring several times before they pick it up) and ask him about the hydraulic flat tappet 288/296 cam. I had a lot of experience with this cam in the marine 454. This cam was used in the Merc 440hp Cyclone engine back in the early to mid 1980's. duration at .050 is 231*/239* list is .550/.575 on 112* lobe seps. It's an excellent cam for what you're doing and will make power up to 5600rpm. Mark

Hey thanks alot for all the help. I was not expecting such fast responses. How about an idea of prop shaft HP on a motor like this. I know it will be just a est. but am trying to get a ballpark figure for prop choices and speed increase numbers. Thanls again!!

If you ported the exhaust side of the heads the engine should make 450 HP @ 5500. I personally wouldn't recommend turning the engine above 5200 rpm, be sure to match the springs and install titainium retainers.
