850-900hp what you think?
really like a naturally aspirated 850 - 900 hp 598cu or 632 cu on PUMP gas. but have a few questions about reliability. what would need less mantiance naturally aspirated motor or a blower, roots, procharger setup etc. on pump gas making 850-900 hp
the intension of the motor would be poker run ( i run hard ) and taking a cruises for 100 miles round trips at cruising speed
the boat is a 27' eliminator daytona with a teague platinum xr drive

You would be better off building a fairly mild sc engine instead of trying to get that much power from a NA motor. A 598 NA making over 800hp is not going to have the longevity that a 598 with a Whipple making 5 psi of boost.Let me know if I can help in any way.
Probably 95% of the engines I build are 598's. My NA 598 makes 770 hp at 5400 rpm on pump gas. It certainly could make more, but not 100 hp more. It has a pretty mild hyd. roller and 10:1 compression. You would need big chief heads, a stout solid roller, etc to make over 850 hp NA. It can be done, but reliability will not be it's strong point.

To do it N/A you'll need high compression and lots of cam,most likely a solid roller. If you don't mind running race gas and doing annual maintenance or even sooner to the valve train you could do it,other wise go back to premium gas and a mild hyd roller with a supercharger. Personally I don't like the real big engines with barely anything between the cylinders,the guys that I now that drag race with them have constant head gasketing problems. On another note I built a 540 efi blower motor a few years ago that made 945 hp on 92 octane and it idled like a stock hp 500,Smitty

I agree with what the others have said. I like a Naturally Aspirated engine too, but for the power you're asking for you would almost have to build it like a full time racing engine. The use of a supercharger would do a much better job of getting you there. There is reliability in cubic inches and a 540cid-598cid would cover that---and adding a supercharger will allow for a mild, easy going cam better manuvering manners....i.e. idling/drivability around the docks, better reliability and the power will be there when you want it. It's more like having a race engine on demand without the hassels of a full tilt NA engine. Have fun!

A real contender
We can build our 600 cubic inch HO750 to a HO800 easily with a slight compression change to 10.0 to 1 but you will need to run 91 octane pump gas. It makes an awesome looking package, what do you think? I don't think there is any supercharger package out there that looks any cooler than those stacks! and closed cooling-its the one!

You can do it on pump gas (93 Octane)...598"-632", you will definately need a solid roller and turn low 6k. Go 10:1 (which is flat top), Dart 355 CNC heads, ~264/272 @.050, .730" gross lift on 112-114. (talk with Bob Madera..rmbuilder) single plane (ported) and 1250 Dominator, or Dart tunnel ram (ported) and 2X775 Demons. Set timing to 32 and you will hit ~850hp on pump gas, ~900hp with tunnel ram set up...I have done it and know several others who did as well. Wette Vette is another on the board who has...both ways.
Agree with others in that its easier with a blower, you won't need a solid roller.

I think that Eddie here makes a beautiful 750. I have seen a couple of his 750's but if you want to sling 850hp some boost is nice. I have one of Eddie's 850's. It is a very happy engine. It is very well turned out and is pretty well mannered. There is a guy on my lake that has a couple of his 950's. I think that they are pushing 200 hours or so with only oil changes. I don't see that happening with a huge N/A engine.
Oh yeah, mine makes WELL over 850hp. I was there for the dyno pulls.
