Default Msd - Yes Or No

I was thinking about buying a msd kit. But am not sure if there is something better to buy. I have the stock setup that's on the 500 now. So if someone could help me out that would be great.

You should be good to the high 700's or so. Above that you are likely getting into boost land with high cyl pressures and some extra spark is good. You are also likely running a little rich at idle at those levels so some extra is good there too.

600 -700 hp, you don't need them

msd's are great when they run. There has been a lot of trouble with the 6m's reliability. If you are going to run a msd, run a red box 6 or 6al(built in rev limiter) and have a spare if going on trips. I have run 6al's for years on both my boats and hot rods, and have had a couple of the units go bad. I'm still a believer.

I have heard unanomous positive feedback from cranes HI-6M ignition. You can use your stock distributor or aftermarket. It has a number of preset advance curves built in depending on your setup. It is pretty cool.

I'd just use the stock ignition unless you have problems with it. If you are fouling plugs at idle, switch to Crane HI 6Mbox and continue using your distributor.

Ok thanks. Hey Griff or anyone, i am also trying to decide on heads. I want to get 600 out of fresh 500 hp i just got the cam you said to get the 741.

So for the heads what route will get me there i am thinking brodix but not sure. I am also wondering what would be the best size since i do plan on making a 540 the next time she is apart.

Also if you can think of anything else that will help me out feel free. I really don't want a blower, or bore the block since i just had it honed and mic ed and all was good might as well wait till next time to bore and put 540 kit in.

I would talk to rmbuilder for the best advice.

You're basically trying to buy parts that will work in 2 separate builds. You have to decide which you should lean towards. I would guess the AFR 315's would be good or maybe the 305's now and then have them worked over for your future 540 build, but rmbuilder can steer you in the best direction for sure, and even get you what you need at a good price.
