Rec vs Oval port?

LATER -- JIM V put wedges in my stock heads along with 2.3 intake valves. I believe that with the right parts your engine would be able to put out at least 600 hp and start and run better than stock. I am VERY happy with my engines. There is a lot more done to my engines besides what Jim did but we all know that the hp is created in the heads.

Has anybody tried to do anything with the small oval port heads found on the 330 horsepower 454? They come stock with 200 cc intake ports, 2.065 intake & 1.72 exhaust valves. Perhaps you could use a bigger intake, grind the intake ports on the head to match, put in bigger valves, hog out the intake runners a little, pocket port the bowls, unshroud the valves, mill the head .020, clean out the exhaust, ect, ect. Anyone tried anything with these heads ?

A few years ago I worked up a set of the peanut ports. I used a 2.100 valve. They flowed great up to .500 lift. then they shut off. I port matched them to an oval port. I never dynoed them but Im sure they would make a ton of torque. The problem was compression and the labor.

Hi Jimv Quick question, i have a 598 chevy with big port merlins,2.25s,bowls done, intakes done just to match the gasket and rough, radiused the exhaust on short side,680 lift solid roller with 310 duration, dart hi deck single 1050 manifold, makes 680 hp at 5800 rpm and 650 ft lbs torque at 5600-5700. my question would your wedges help me,its in a 5200 lb single engine boat with a 1.6 gear ratio drive with stelling headers and 9 to 1 comp? I did cylinder heads for 20 years for some shops here on LI so know alot about all the factors in a motor, but your wedges seem to help alot of guys. thanks for the imfo tripps

With 598 ci. the wedges will make more torque at the mid rpm level. I believe with that camshaft the motor wants to rpm. I would definetly go with the 2.300 intake valves. With that ci. the heads need to flow big numbers. To answer your question I wouln't use the wedges unless your max rpm was 5000. The rest of your components say no. Your motor may be starving on both intake and exhaust. my opinion

We are still working on the project. Due to the heavey work load it got put on the back burner. We will try to complete in the late spring.
The 650hp 502 uses a mechanical roller cam and merlin heads.
