Question Square Bore Carb on a Dual Pattern Intake

Am I understanding it correctly that if you have a square bore intake and put a spread-bore carb you need an adapter AND that you will loose performance and have fuel distribution problems? ALSO if I put a square bore carb on a performer intake that has the Spread-Bore and Square-Bore mounting holes that this WILL NOT cause problems???? I want to use my Edelbrock Vortec Manifold with the dual pattern setup with my Edelbrock Carb. This is on a 355 SBC........
