Default What do u think..Baja Outlaw 24 with Brand new 496 FI Crate motor swap??

Im looking to take my stock 330hp 454 out and build something with say 425-450hp this winter, but today i found a Brand new 496 Fuel injected complete with everything, harness, exhaust, EVERYTHING in a crate at a boat place. He said i can have it for $8000.00. So i started thinking.....if i were to buy a 454 or 502 longblock...for 5800, then i need exhaust 2000, intake, carb 600 , fuel pump 200. its going to cost more...

Anyone know of anyone that put a new 496 in a outlaw 24, how fast will it be???

Depends on which 496 you are talking about? The 375 hp I would not expect more than 2 to 3 MPH gain and the 425 hp I would expect 4 to 6 MPH more than your 330. I have no personal experience with that hull, but everyone seems to say it takes a lot of HP to make it run fast.

I would look to build something with over 500hp to be honest,
like stated above your mph gains will be pretty minimal

factory motors are low on power and cost a lot,

for $8G's you could put something together that will make more than that 496 will in stock form

do you know any history on that motor at all ?
is it new or used ?

425hp will put you at 65mph.

If you like boating more than wrenching, the 496 would be the way to go. Sure, Merc motors cost a lot, but in the long run you may be $$ ahead.

Oh c'mon Dave! Just because it doesn't say Merc doesn't mean it won't be reliable. There are plenty of engine builders that can build engines every bit as good if not better than a stock merc. 2 seasons on my non-stock 500hp 454 with nothing to do but oil changes. I run mine pretty hard too. She likes it that way!

I know.......But you can read HORROR stories on here all day long about "custom" motors.

There are a lot of builders out there. The trick is to find a GOOD one!

If you're not happy with the 496 it takes a lot of money to make it faster. To take that engine from 425 to say 525 its going to cost you another $7500.00. So thats $15500.00 for 525+ hp. Why not just stroke your 454 to 496. You could build a really nice 454 stroker for less and have way more options on parts.

or you could not buy a stroker kit and still make over 500hp with 454 inches and pump gas with stock heads, and save even more money
a stock magnum bottom end will get you there and the cost will be way less than half the cost of a stroker kit
I got a good set of rods and pistons if your interested let me know

its not a hard combo to put together at all

I thought you got those merlin heads didnt you ??

I don't think you'll make 500hp with the stock heads. We bumped the compression on mine and went to aluminum heads and JUST broke 500. Stock heads might do it with a ton of port work, but it would be better to just buy some nice new heads.
