Question new fuel pump started smoking

I just installed a new electric fuel pump on my 19ft 97 Scarab. It ran fine for awhile then the fuel pump started smoking. I turned off the engine. I tried it again it didn't smoke, sat at idle for a little bit then revved it a little and it started smoking again. Is this a faulty fuel pump or what?

Hmmm, smoke and fuel may not mix too well for long......

I would say swap it out.

Make sure you have big wires as short as possible with as few connections to the pump as practical. Good ground etc. Corrosion in the wiring or a bad connection in the wiring causes increased resistance in the wiring. The increased resistance will cause lower voltage at the fuel pump motor. A DC motor (i.e. fuel pump motor) will try to draw more current to produce the same power output. The high current will produce higher temps in the motor.

Thunderstruck is right on the money. Check your wiring, and replace the pump. Not something to risk a fire with.

Also make sure you run it off a relay.
