How long do they last? If fitted properly and oil is changed the life of the bushing will outlast the life of the lifter,I would say 2:1 on a solid roller with .700- .735 lift on a hydraulic maybe 3:1 or 4:1.
They are not as hard as the block. If you run a lifter in a cast block it is taken out with scratches and body wear, in bronze the lifter remains clean. There are different type of liners 8-10$ bushings to $35 key way bushings.

Repair the block you have. So you buy a new or new used block and get the same story from your machine shop.
Now you have spent the $ for new blocks and still have the same problem.
Bore and bronze sleeve the guides and sleeve the block.
