I use trans fluid in my trim pump for my outboard (I use a Mercruiser pump) however the reasoning is because it gives a slight speed advantage over 30 wt. Not speed as in top end, but in operating speed for the up trim, especially when using 24V... Other than that I don't see any reason for not using regular ole 30wt as recommended.

brad,is it possible that the mercury engineers know more than the general boating public i agree with you,but i beleive one could use other fluids, and have no problems.

Huh? I said nothing about Number Six drive oil or transmissions. I only mentioned I use 30 wt oil (any brand) in my trim pumps as suggested by Mercury Racing. I use Type F trans fluid only in Bam transmissions also suggested strongly by Bam. I use Torco MTF oil in dry sump Sixes also strongly suggested by Mercury. I let engineers decide what works best. I hate to experiment at my expense.

Mercury engineers also thought wetsump drives would be around forever.See Pat W! Let's see who would have thought you could run 30torco Manuel transmission fluid In a #6 ,,went from 5 gals of 85-90 weight. Now only 6 quarts.
I Like to lead and not follow, pushing the limits and trying different things can only push
the limits to better performance.Like I said before mineral is for weed eaters!
It's all good but I've never liked rules and I don't believe engineers are Gods!

Just a thought. Isn't oil, motor or gear, primarily used to lubricate? Though oil is compressable it seems like trans fluid which is made to operate basically as hydraulic fluid with a bunch of cleaner in it, be more efficient?

Talk about engineers, you guys are over engineering a simple hydraulic pump and a couple rams. Put what ever you want in it. The lower viscosity, the faster it will go up and down. Merc used to recommend 20wt.

FWIW, Konrad recommends Dextrom in their trim systems.
