Im fairly certain engine removal is required. Mine was leaking due to corrosion. I removed it, sandblasted it and filled in the corroded areas with JB weld then ground/sanded it down flat. No more leaks. Its also a good time to clean and do bilge maintenance and inspect/the coupler as long as the engine is out.

I tried one time ,it is just about impossible. Pull the engine and take the opportunity to clean up any rust on your engine, replace or rebuild your starter clean the bilge , check the bilge pump and any other items you cannot do with the engine in the boat . Good luck.
