Corroded manifolds = engine rebuild
Ah saddness :-( My starboard engine would not start up for spring. The yard manager is gestimating $7500 as total price for getting engine out, rebuilding and re-installing. Pic of one of the exhaust ports shows the reason why (they all look like this). Anybody have any comments on this? Remanufactured engine, rebuild etc...
One sad camper!

That sucks. Try to check out the motors for sale right here on the O.S.O. board. There are some good deals on almost new motors. Alamo has over 300 motors of all varieties in stock.

Check out what kind of warranty they will give you on the rebuild job. You may find it cheaper and get a longer warranty if you get a rebuilt engine from one of the major rebuilders.

BUMMER DUDE! I'm actually changing my manifold gaskets tomorrow and I hope I don't find the same thing. I agree with insptech on the price and warranty thing. If you buy a rebuild you would probably be on the water sooner also. Good luck

What are we seeing in that picture? Is it a head? What is wrong other than this? Unless you damaged the lower end of the engine, I don't see why replacement is necessary. Do the cylinder walls look like this too? I would try to get away with exhaust manifolds and heads. What is the engine?

You are seeing one of the exhaust ports. See attached pic. I don't know what the cylinder walls look like yet. I am hoping that they are OK and that I will be able to just replace the manifolds and heads. This is a 10 yr old 7.4L mercruiser blue water 454.

That is unlikely. Will the engine turn over by hand??

No. In order here is what they did:
1. Used starter motor to try to turn engine
2. Added penetrating oil and tried above
3. Used breaker bar to try to turn engine
( I tried to turn it using my own breaker bar and I applied
a lot of force - no play at all - nothing)
4. They pulled the riser and manifold off to see extent
of damage.
5. They told me the engine had to come out based on
the existing corrosion.
6. That is where we are now, waiting for them to pull the
engine and see what shape the block is in.

For future reference Rich I would tell you to service/inspect the exhaust manifolds (disassemble) every third year minimally, depending on where you boat in the bay. Less oftern farther North, more often below Pooles Island. How do the insides of the Port engine manifolds look?
