We take a few thou off the key where it rides in the gear. I think the shaft twists, skews the key and BAM - splits the gear. We are also able to get an extra friction plate in them.

I have been told that overfilling the trannys slightly will not hurt them. Hopefully I will know what happened to mine by the end of the day and I will post.
