Question Bravo lower unit oil filling problem, minimum oil to use safe?

I have a nose cone on my bravo drive, and did an lower unit oil change, but the pump for the lower fill skrew does not fit, the diameter is too large.

So I took the upper plate off and poured the fluid for the top, kept my thumb on the top skrew to let the oil go down, waited a bit, turned the prop, and when the oil came out of the top skrew and put the skrew in, put the upper plate on.

And filled the resovoir to just above the line.

Used only 1.5 litres (book says 2.78)

Drove is slowly, and kept checking the resovoir, but did not go down.

Not sure if it is safe to use, or what should I do?

My lower unit is a 1990 (maybe it has a lower capacity than the book I'm using for a 1992 or newer, but I doubt that)

Please let me know.

Thank you very much again!

Even my older Bravos had the fill plug behind the prop. What year are they?

Not sure, mine is in the front in the nose cone. And the cone makes it a least a 1/2" deeper, and the diameter of the plug, so the pump in too large in diameter to fit in.

If you didn't get 2.8 qts, then its not safe to run. You have air pockets in the drive. It must be filled from the bottom. Now you have to drain it again and start over. You will have to make your own tip for the pump.

Is there any other way of getting the bubbles out??

Driving slow etc...

Thanks again.

I doubt you'll get the air out by using it. Gear oil is thick, and by using the drive, you'll just put the air into small bubbles. Then when cut off, it will slowly separate. Even at idle, you could harm the gears with this oil /air mix - still quite a bit of torque going through them.

Drain & refill from the bottom.

Will drain and re-do.

Where can I get a pump that will fit the nose cone?

I doubt West marine would carry it (i'll check)

I checked again, to see why it does not fit, the fitting is too large to get in the hole for the skrew.

Simple, just need a longer tip, but finding that is another thing.

Thanks again for all the help.

Greatly appreciated!

Buy a 3/8-16 bolt and drill the center out
