496 (Stroked 454)
Have any of you guys had good luck running this engine combination. The guy who is going to machine my block says they make great hp,s and does suggest going any bigger. It is a shortdeck block.Does anyone think it is possible to have 500 reliable hp,s at the prop on pump fuel (89)So far i have the blockand carb.Any other suggestions would be great.

It works great!!!
I am running a 4.25" stroke with 6.385" rods in a 454 (330) block. I am actually .070" over bore for 498". I think 500 prop HP is attainable on pump gas pretty easily. I run around 13:1 compression and burn 110 octane Nascar fuel. I would say if you have good flowing heads, 9:1 comp with iron heads or 10:1 with aluminum heads, single plane intake manifold, Holley 850 carb, hydraulic roller cam, and good exhaust you will be there. The stroke makes great torque and they still like to rev. I feel it is a good combo.

MSD 6M2 box with rev limiter set at 6800. I also run the MSD distributor. It is the only way to go if you plan on running over 5400 RPM. The MSD stuff also makes for a better idle and the ability to alter the timing curve is very nice.

Block is junk
I dropped of the block that had been sitting around for wile last night .Wasnt sureif it would be ok due to previuse owner over seasoned(rust) and got the call that machine shop said it was not too good ( junk). So much for the 496 project.Well anyways I found a fresh 502 short block to work with. Now I have to come up with a good combo for a 502 .

You can get somewhere near 540 cubes with the 502 block and the 4.25 stroke crank. I know a lot of guys on OSO have proven combos that they will share with you. I think 650 to 700 HP on pump gas can be a reality with that many cubes. One piece of advice would be to decide on a motor size and do it the first time. If I would have done that it would have saved me a lot of money. I know it is hard once the speed bug bites, NEVER ENOUGH!!!! Good Luck!
KAAMA, Thanks!!!
