with the extra clearance from running forged pistons, and lower tension oil ring, that is normal to use some oil on the 454mag and 502 mag, now the 454mpi {310hp} use cast pistons and reg rings so they do not use any oil, use a straight 40 wt should help a little

Don't be alarmed. I think I use to have one of the worst ones out there. I did run it VERY hard, but it burned a quart with every tank of gas. But it always ran great and when I sold it with 170 hours it was as strong as the day it was new.

I tried several different oils, Valoline 40 wt racing oil did the best job, however I felt Mobile 1 15W50 was best for engine life and run it only the last 100 hours and just added oil as needed.

If you will let the engine come up to full operating temperature at idle, great for long no wake zones, you will find it will not use as much.

For those of you that have the hard starting after shutting down for a while. I was told by a merc tec to run the blower for 5 minutes or so After shutting down. It helps prevent "heat Soak".


If it doesn't start and you don't want to wait a few minutes. Put the trottle all the way full. The TPS Puts the ECU in flood mode. Turn the Key and she starts right away after a few crank overs. just be quick to pull back on the throttles, and it
Works every time. I only have it happen on hot muggy days. It happens alot less when I remember to run the blower for a while after shutting down
