You did not say why you have the motor apart and getting machine work done on it. Did something fail or is it just worn out?

If the motor is all apart it would be a shame not to do some performance up grades ! If your using the stock low compression pistons like I am you can't get too radical wth the cam because you'll loose a lot of bottom end & mid range. After a lot of research I went with Crane # 133801 222/234 duration & .529/.525 lift. On sale at Summit for $129.95 for cam & lifters. The heads are weakest performance link here but I couldn't afford 2 new sets so I ported mine and got rid of the big mis match between the intake & cylinder head. The stock q-jet carb flows 750 cfm & since these motors are being built for lower rpm power & torque I think it would be a waste of money to replace them. I just replaced the secondary metering rods for more fuel. Replacement of the intake is a must, make sure you have clearance to the top of your hatch for the higher manifold. I'm keeping the stock exhaust for now, but next year i'll probably up grade. I have one motor back togeather & fired up, it sounds great. The other one is in progress now. I hope to splash in 2 - 3 weeks.

It is just time for the rebuild. I was starting to use oil.

It is now bored 30 over too. If that makes a difference in cam selection.

Bo, So which intake did you go with? I have room under my hatch still. What are the advantages to the taller intake? Better fuel atomization and Weight. That cast iron guy is HEAVY.

Thanks for everyones help

I went with an early GM cast manifold # 3883948 which I modified per recommendations in the Big block Marine performance book. You can find these at swap meets or for sale in the Chevy parts section of Hemmings Motor News. The big advantage is because it's 2 inches taller the curves of the intake are more gradual & sweeping resulting in more air flow. If you want to talk give me your e mail & I'll send you my phone #. You can send it as a private message if you don't want it on the board.

I was just reading about you guys putting kits in your 330's, In the kits you are using do you have to make any crank mods. for I have been told that the 330 have a weak bottom end and if this is true putting 100hp to these lower ends they wont last long will they. I have a aluminum intake that came off a 425hp stock 454 that has never had gas in it if any one interested. good luck on your mods.

It has a cast crank, not as desirable as a forged crank, but ok to use up to 500 HP without any problems.
