Quench your thrist?
The smallest Moore's book shows was chevy marine part number 14097001 at .034 and looks like it comes out to be .054 quench.Without doing the machine work at this time anyone know of a marine head gasket with some lower compressed numbers for Gen VI 502?

Hi James,
Sent you a PM with respect to your other questions. As to head gasket, prior to adding our Blowers, we were running Felpro blues and the non crushed thickness was .038.
When I ran 7 Litre Hydros, we were running 468 CI (427 .190 over) and also used the felpro blue. Compression was 12.5 to 1. Deck was virtually 0 with app. .075 clearance on the intake and .110 on the exhaust (both titanium). Never had a gasket failure.
Good luck with your set up.
Steve

In Moores book on SBC's he says to alter quench with the gasket thickness. Have to find out what the deck to piston height is, if anything, and find a gasket with the correct compressed thickness to fill the gap to obtain correct quench height. He recommened using shim type gaskets.

Iggy thanks. mine is a stock 502 so I am guessing as to what Dennis says deck hight from factory is close to 9.800" stroke 4.0" 2.0" extend up into cyl. block.connecting rod 6.0135" piston pin1.645" add 2 + 6.135+1.645=9.78"piston top .020"below deck hight 9.800deck hight minus 9.780=.020 below deck. Need .018 gasket and quench will be .038 where he say it should be. The smallest listed is the chevy marine gasket at .030 and will put it at .054 ! Was just wondering if any gaskets are out there now, his book was printed in 1998.Looks like they have steel shim for the mark IV block only (mine gen6) but it is not marine use. Wonder if you had closed cooling system on could you could use it on the mark IV? Looks like this is something you address when you have the block torn down.I am just putting the new merlins on it for now and was trying to get the numbers down if at all possible?

Moore claims in his (SBC marine) book that the metal shim type gasket for marine use is still availabe from GM. Don't know how long ago it (the book) was published but it's worth looking into.
I would imagine they still manufacture it for those that need one.
I think you're right, if you ran a closed system you could use a copper gasket in place of stainless.
Sorry if I'm no help on the BBC engine. I haven't built one for marine use before, only street.
Was looking through a PAW Performance catalog and some of their gaskets list the after torque thickness. Maybe a manufacturers site would do the same?

Iggy I think all they show is the steel type for the older MarkIV block and I do not think it can be used on an open marine system.I have Gen 6 won't work.thanks
