Going to the 58x setup was worth almost 100hp more over a small cap HEI on these engines. These used a VR crank sensor, and a slotted rotate-able trigger wheel mounted to the center portion of the harmonic balancer.

The E38 and EFILive is not a bad route to go if you do a MAF-less tune on it and just use the MAP sensor. I did an LS7 in a Porsche 911 with it and it was a wicked set up.

At this point I have figured out the unlock codes for most all of the MEFI's from every manufacturer, so base tunes are available for everything from old Northstar's, to Ecotec's, to Ramjet's, to any LS engine, to any of the OEM setups.

For a wideband O2 setup, much of the time I recommend the Innovate MTX-L or LC-1 with display. They are both about $170 off of ebay, and it comes with the Bosch wideband sensor included. It is a pretty nice deal.
Where did you find the trigger wheel? Everything I've seen so far is custom and I don't have access to a fab shop any more.

This is a great post, I have been wondering about the Holley HP units for some time, the info here is great as always. When I winterized my boat I noticed some unusual mist coming out of my headers, If I have a leak and have to replace them, I'm getting O2 bungs installed. My motor pulls 2.5" of vacuum at idle in gear, so setting the carb up for a good idle is a little difficult. Lord knows I love to have gadgets to play with, this may be the year for EFI. How is the LCD display for programming the Holley HP's? Can it be dash mounted?

Just read that the Holley HP was on the winning engine at the Engine Masters competition. Easy to use and best performance not a bad combination. I may be moving to EFI after all.

I used a GM 7727 MAP based ECU on my Formulas engine. Very cost effective and used a real-time emulator to do all the programming. Also running it in Closed loop. This is a 388 C.I. SBC 9:1 compression 425 HP and 444 Ft. Lbs.

Yes, it has multiple bolt patterns on the back to fit aftermarket dash mounts, or you can mount it flush. It works great for making changes on the fly and you can display all the gauges, view datalogs, etc.

Looks nice, other than you may want to invest in some aftermarket exhaust with long risers. Big cams may revert water back into your engine.

Our ZZ9 cam on a 114 LSA works great with the marine manifolds..... no reversion problems. I'm installing the Corsa Captians Call for this coming season. If I make any more power than I'll have outdrive problems. I just wanted an efficient engine, no big power. I doubled the HP of the tired 350 and added 100 ft.lbs over a 3000 RPM range. Peak torque is right at 4800 RPM, peak HP is at 5100. So far everything has worked out great.

What software are you using? What vintage is the 7727, I'm not familiar with that model?

I use Tuner Cat. The 7727 ECU was used in 1990-1991 Corvettes as well as many 3.1 liter V6 Cars. It is a weatherproof ECU. An "under-dash" equivalent was used in the 1990-1992 Camaros and Firebirds with the TPI SBC engine. The base program I use and start with on most retro-fits is from a 90-92 Camaro.
