In a 2001 MPI 7.4 is the distributor system stand alone or does it recieve its input from ECM ie could I change to a carb system with out changing the ignition system.

nope the ecm fires the coil and controls the timing the dist you need at a minimum something to replace the ecm many after mkt units are compatable with the dist/coil tho
