I've used gas and mineral spirits. Just make sure to get whatever you use completely evaporated before repacking. Some old timers used to tell me not to clean them, just pack in new grease.

I'm gonna try the mineral spirits. If that does not work, then I will go to gas
The bearings have old grease in them, so I want to start fresh with synthetic grease.

Gas is fine. Diesel fuel also works but stinks.
Once thinned, blow them with air.
Harbor freight and Northern tool and such have cheap bearing packers that work great. Of course your fingers work good enough if you're not afraid of getting grease on them.
