Default For what it's worth...

Volvo solved this problem by installing a (patented) vapor separator/fuel cooler on their engines. Not only is the incoming fuel run through this tank on the back of the engine, the recirculated fuel from the high-pressure system goes back through there as well. Not sure if it can be retrofitted to a Merc, but it does work perfectly - no open hatches required.
