1996 7.4 mpi Timing question
Again thanks again for all the help with getting my motor to get spark its now fixed and running great but i have a question about the timing I set the timing by the manuel at 8 degrees before top dear center runs great but it idle at 800 rpm and the book says to idle it at 650-700 but their is no linkage adjustiment left , the butterflys are closed , but i noticed if I set the timing at 4 degrees before top dead center it runs fine and idles at 650 rpm is this acceptable or will it harm my motor , Thanks James

Here is a link to a cool little tool that will put the mpi into base timing mode
http://www.rinda.com/marine/marine.htm
I thing it can be done with a jumper wire as well I'll see if I can find one of the threads and post it for you

You have to jump the A and B pins in the data plug. That will put the ecm in base timing mode. Then, set the timing to 8 deg. BTDC. You can either use the Merc timing jumper, a small piece of wire, or a paperclip. I use the paperclip since I can never find the Merc tool in the shop when I need it. Once you put the jumper in, you may need to rev the engine up to 1500 rpm or so to get the timing to stabilize.
