Starter Help please -- ASAP
Hey all
Need some questions answered for me if anyone can help!
I need 2 starters for this tub to run
Does anyone know a cross reference number to a car or model/year that these starters cross reference?
As I know it, there is no such thing as a marine starter just that this particular starter is all sealed and no air gaps for sparks ect to get through.
I see that some small blocks and big blocks basically use the same one.
I need the cross reference for it to a car make and model
OE number is 10496873
AC Delco # is 323-367
Most pep boys rebuilds are Prostart, even a cross reference number to that or what not would be helpful

I'm glad to see that you have not given up! I spent all winter on my project, just to have a piston melt after about 4 times out in the boat. I felt like crying!!! But yanked it out, sent it to the engine builder, back in the boat and boating for a couple of weeks now!
You still have time to finish and enjoy a little boating.
as far as the starters go, I would stick with the marine starters. Call Gary at Ward Marine in Winthrop, Ma, (617)846-1421 best prices, best service, if they are in stock they will go out today!
You have had too many hold ups now, it would be very unwise to not put a "spark" safe marine starter under your enclosed engine hatch!!

You need to rebuild the starters you have. I would not put a auto starter on the boat especialy if you cant change back to a marine starter at a later date. Auto starters are not ignition protected. Fuel fumes are heavier that air and will collect in the bilge near the starters. Its a bomb waiting to happen. You dont even need a fuel leak for it to happen. Also if it does burn for any reason and your insurance co. finds a non marine electrical componet on the boat they will not pay the claim. You should be able to get them rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a new marine starter. I know of one guy who bought an auto starter and took it apart and replaced the end caps with the ones off of his marine starter. I dont know if there is any other mods to make a marine starter out of a auto one.

Rebuild shop wanted 150.00 each to rebuild them

they are starters, not made out of 18 K gold buddy
Thing is there is not technically a "marine" starter
this starter I believe was out of a 1990 Caprice with a police package.
all totally sealed up , no gaps or vents of any kind.
Im still working on that but it is a staggered starter type
BBC should all be 168 tooth, and I need it totally sealed
Not sure but I think it is the 8 inch model , seemed small to me, not like one of the big huge honkin mo fo's
going to Napa after work, they said they have them there 3 of them, 50 a piece
the origional quote to rebuild was 40 from one guy but he is not around until next week.
so OTHER guy in next town wants 150 each to rebuild

There is a diff between auto and marine starters. Marine units have an extra plate between the steel housing and the nose piece. The rear plate has no vents. The relay (solenoid) is sealed.
