Stainless Marine Exh Manifolds, will they work with 700 hp engine build?
Am in the process of building a pair of 540's for a 1985 12 meter fountain and we are looking to be making 650-700 hp n/a with dart aluminum heads, 2.35 valves. The exhaust I have is stainless marine manifolds with dry tailpipes that were custom SM pipes to fit the Fountain. I also have a set of CMI headers but would need to get tails made and also figure out how to make an exhaust tip that would work as well, the current tails come right off the top of the manifold and through the hull and out the boat. I am hearing that these manifolds will not flow well enough with this size engine set up and that I would have to run bigger exhaust, is this true? Anyone know what the max hp or air flow is for Stainless Marine manifolds? Didnt want to have to wait a month and a half for CMI to make tails, would be great to use the ones already fitting the boat. Thanks for any info! Mike

Im sure some excellant engine builders on here will chime in sometime, all I can tell you is from my personal exp YES. At 700 hp N/A your prob at about a good point where you would see a hp gain with the CMIs.

Tested CMI E- tops vs SM vs some 15.5 " 1- off KE cast alum manifolds at Chief. The 468 ci NA eng were almost the same at about HP 650 HP. Bottom line was 15.5 runner exhaust all had similar performance. In later testing, the CMI Sport Tubes added +15 HP.
