Default Depth Finder Problems

Anyone had any experience with depth gages? Mine reads way off the actual depth but yet now and then appears to read correct.....could the thru hull transducer be shot or??? I think the brand is Data Marine on a mid eighty's wellcraft....Fred

I would bet the transducer is mounted directly to the bottom of the hull.....therefore it is "slanted" from vertical. The farther from vertical the transducer, the larger the error at all depths. The greater the depth, the greater the error. Some depth finders have an "offset" feature to adjust the readings.

What is wrong with mine? It will blink on and then turn off. It looks like the x-ducer took a lick because part of the mounting molding is busted. How much of a lick can they take? Doesn't look cracked, but only half held to mount.

I don't know about yours Patrick, but I have dropped my locator ( with display-fishfinder) and had no problems with it. I believe it should "keep on tickin'.....". If it blinks, I would check the hot & ground connections or a low battery......had that happen in my fishing boat one......

My uniden has a sensitivity adjustment that I had to adjust, It is for shallow water sensativity. I cranked it up a little and the blinking stoped and now it works.

I haven't got under the boat yet to look at the surface of the transducer yet, maybe I will see something there, its not 10 or 15 feet off it's like 50-100 feet off!....Fred

Fred, break down and get a new one. It's probably the same year as the boat and needs to be replaced. You can get a decent one at Boat US or West Marine for under $150.

Mike, I will look at replacing, didn't know if it was a common problem or not, my Scarab was 5 years older with the same unit on it that still worked fine so I thought it was possibly something I overlooked,...Fred
