How big is this oil pan
Came off what we think is a Mercruiser 482 cyclone (stroked 427 BBC). I've read its a 10 and 12 qt and of course it didn't come with a dipstick.
Any help?

I have the same pan mine holds 12qts and I'm still below the windage tray. I made a dipstick tube for mine and used a dipstick out of an old ford van and cut it down. The pan is a nightmare with a block mounted starter...

I have a mini starter and the problem is the starter bolts are two long to fit between the kickout on the pan and the block. I took a couple threads off the bolt and grinded some of the head off. So the bolt would fit. Maybe my pan is different cause at 12 qt I'm right on the money...

10qt it is. Will be filling it up tomorrow to mark a stick.
But just for argument sake...
Does anyone know how far down from the pan rail the oil level should be? ie, The oil level should be XX inches below the pan rail?

That pan looks just like the same one from the 540 Bulldog, also. There is a , wind-age tray that bolts to the mains. It's a little different than the stock ones, heavier and slotted. You can use a aftermarket one, but will require some fitting. I also think; the pick-up is different for sure.

Old school custom oil pick up. You can see where they had to turn the tube down so it would be lower in the pan but that would make the head way off from being flat. So they cut the end off and put it back together and then used a distributor hold down as a support. Again not pretty but it will work.
Propped it up level and filled the pan with 10qts of water. As high as it filled it up I think it proves its not a 12qt. The 10qts looks like it should be the right level. There is a oil temp sender on the opposite side from the dipstick will be covered by about an inch so I think we got it.
Thanks folks.
