OK, so, if it is the gimbal bearing, how difficult is it to replace? Can it be done with the engine and transom assembly still on the boat? It appears that it can, I just wanted to verify.

yes, it can be done with the engine and transom assembly on the boat...just have to pull the drive. Mechanic will have a bearing puller and istallation tool. Don't forget to grease - not too much (almost as bad as not enough)
