Default 700r4 tranny is starting to slip

The 700r4 tranny in the truck that I tow my boat with is starting to slip. It is only when it is cold with in the first few minutes of running. The tranny seems to slip into neutral and then I come off the gas and it will couple again. The tranny has about 110K miles on it.

Is it worth while to have the dealer look at it? Is this how they die? Should I just drive it until it quits? Does it sound like one of the electrical switches in it? Should I change the fluid?

Any ideas?

Call your local Chevy dealer. I think they have pretty reasonable pricing on a factory rebuilt unit but I'm not positive.

I wouldn't drive it that way too much longer. It will just stop and strand you like mine did!!

i popped reverse and second over the weekend. I must say it drove pretty well with a broken tranny. It happen while i was in virginia and it made it back 700 miles to NY after blowing 2 gears.

try your local lee myles or aamco. They doa ton of american cars and trucks and gave me a pretty good price and a 2 year 24k warrantee

Pick up a hot rod magazine or 4x4 and look for ads. If you can do the RnR yourself you can get some heavy duty rebuilt ones for less than a tranny shop would charge. There is a kit that drill out some passages in the valve body and increases the pressure.

Is the fluid burned?? Is your " Check Engine Light " on?

Sounds like your trans. needs an overhaul...

Does it shift 1-2 harder than usual?
If so, it sounds like the pump is laying down on you. Requires removing trans to get to pump, so a complete set of frictions should be done at the same time.

Where do you live?? Perhaps an OSO member in your area can put you in contact with a reputable transmission shop. If you lived in West Michigan I'd recomend Certified Automatic Transmission Many OSO members use Steves shop.

You may have caught it with the fluid idea. The fluid was not burn but the quanity was low. The tranny has only slipped on me twice and the first time I thought it was a transfer case problem. My drive way is on a slope and I have checked for fluid but I have been lazy and not done the check with the enine running in park on flat ground. My tranny was two quarts low.

Waterfoul.

I live in phoenix. There is a real problem with the quality of repair work here. If I don't do it myself I usually take it to the dealer. the dealer is expensive but things seem to last a little longer. Maybe I can order a rebuilt gm part from Jim Pace. They and salee gm seem to have some good prices.

I may just nurse it by checking the fluid for a while. I need to figure out where it is leaking.

Two quarts low on fluid will cause the problem you are talking describing.

I just went thru a similar situation. Turns out that when some minor service was done (by me and my dodge tranny mechanic neighbor) we didn't get the tranny full. 3.5 quarts low and the truck would barely move. and HE didn't have a clue. Tranny guy without a clue. Took it in to Certified and he figured it out in 20 minutes. Cost me $44.80 to find out I was low on fluid. Check the fluid, top it off, drive it a while. Check it again. Perhaps you could park it in the street (flat surface??) for a night or two and see some spots from leaking??? Parking on an incline may not allow you to find the leak as easy.
