I didn't dyno due to time and money, but my combo is this, 540CI 9.6:1 with AFR 325 heads with CNC bowl and chamber, cam is 241/[email protected] and 681/663 lift on 112, Johnson lifters, 1.7 Scorpion rockers, single plane intakes and 1050 Quick fuel carbs.... this combo should EASILY be making 650+ HP and enough TQ to carry my heavy Mistress to at least the same speeds I saw with old power and more... but that's not happening....
old combo was 565 CI with 9.5:1 and 320CC pro comps, cams were 236/[email protected] and .578/.578 on 114, stock gm lifters, erson rockers 1.7, same intakes and my HP500 carbs (800's) boat easily went 73.5 @5500 all day long never skipped a beat until it tossed a rod, now those engines had tons of issues but somehow made power that I just don't have anymore....they dynode at 598HP@5200 and 661TQ@4400 and carried boat to 5500 rpm easily.....

What oil pans are you running? I've seen a couple engine puke out around 5500 because of the lifters. Adding a 1/2-1qt more oil some times took care of it. (keep an eye on aerating the oil)

didn't make more power I don't think, it's more about the TQ and where these make the power.... over my old ones... Cigrocket made 680 hp on the dyno, spun 27 Mirage to 5350 @74-75 mph, with very similar engines and the same hull and TRS, I am at 72.5 so far @5400, so I am close, I am gonna keep playing with it and keep tuning... I have 12QT pans, no oiling issues lol
This is hurts to read this. A 565 w/ ProComp heads makes more power than a 540 w/ AFR heads and CNC work. There has to be something going on.

OK, Mild Thunder Joe may be onto something to look at..... I bought pans I could never identify, I figured 12 qt pans, buddy I got them from said 10, today I changed oil and had to add 13qts to read full on sticks, but I guess I just trusted they were accurate, they may not be.... and I might have way too much oil causing the crank to grab oil.... so my whole system with cooler and lines probably has 15qts I bet... this "could" be my issue, I doubt I am that lucky but its easy to suck out 2 qts and try it....hmmmmm
link is thread with my pan pics.... never did find out whos they are...

If your cranks are splashing in the pool, wouldnt that aerate the mess into a a bubblebath and negatively effect lubrication?? you would see aerated oil as a drop in oil pressure?? Mind you this is random musings of an inquisitive mind, not actual experience...
