From the guys I talked to most things are not worth the 1-2 mph change...

Why not ? You compare this 540 to your last 565 .
565 is just 7cid's different from the 572.

You think 25cid's should have no real difference, but now you think 7cid's is ?

So.....you starting to get my drift ?

I compared to my old ones when I realized hmmmm they had more cubes so yes they made more TQ, listen I know what's going on, I know what to do to make it best I can and just am deal with it, I don't think the bob considered my boat weight when cams were figured out, think about it.... Put these engines in a 35 fountain and see how they run up to 6000 all day long, my goal was to use existing props not run smaller ones to get there... I am talking to actual guys that build engines themselves and rig boats and run them to get my final answers... The boat is pretty much gonna be 75 mph best no matter what changes I make, so making sure props are labbed back to perfection is the first place to start ... Advancing cams, changing intakes and all that is not gonna make enough difference to see the gains and will be a waste of more time and money, props need done no matter what so I will be going there next...

Back when you were planning out these builds, was a 572+ci ever brought up? In the grand scheme since you buying new, it wouldnt have cost much more. The 540 platform was popular because most had std deck 502 mercs and stroked them , so it was the obvious choice.

A buddy of mine just did some 572s , 10:1, afr heads with some cleanup work, victor jr, 1200 dominator, custom cam , engines made gobs of torque, and 770ish hp at 6000 thru small cmi headers

I don't have hatch height for the 572 or I would have and went 600CI ish to push the boat I was told these would do the job...

Who's cams in those?

They were specd by chris straub. The guy who got laughed at and banned from oso by some of the in crowd. I was a bit skeptical at first, but he hit the power goal at a much lower rpm , without having to rev the engine with small props and bad cruise speed. The heads were new afr 335s, that had guides honed to spec, valve jobs touched up, flowed, etc. Im sure with big dyno headers they would have cracked 800 at 6000rpm.
