#6 drive oil change-unit comes off 1st?
I'm going to have to drain and refill the drive oil on older wet #6's. I have the mother of all pumps and alot of drive oil. Is it true that the drives need to be removed for this? Going to tackle it tomorrow in the shop. Thanks.

Considering that I'm not sure when the switch from wet sump to dry took place, 1996 service procedure indicates the drive does not need to be removed. There is a typical (Merc) lower unit plug to empty/fill (port side). There is a pipe plug above the drive shaft on the inner transom plate that must be removed as well as the fill plug for the reservoir on the inner transom plate. Fill till oil comes out pipe plug, re-install pipe plug, then fill till oil appears in fill gauge.

thanks, ya ole fart. reason was I was told I had to take them off. I have the hose off from the resevoir to the upper inside the transom. Yesterday when I trimmed the drive up, oil came out of the hose nipple on the inside upper. I'll look for the pipe plug.
