Octane Booster
Our club is having a fun run next weekend that is long enough that I may not be able to get there and back on one tank of gas. They don't sell anything over 89 where we're going and I've never had to use a booster before to reach the 92 that I need. Usually I just mix 1/3 100 and 2/3 89. Is there any particular brand that anyone recommends? Or, shouldn't I use it at all?
To be safe, I topped of the tank today with 30 gallons of 100, assuming if I use 2/3rds of the tank getting there, I can add 1/3 of 89 and still probably be close to 92. What does everyone do?

Toluol (paint thinner from hardware store) can be added. 1 gal toluol per 10 gal 92 octane nets 94 octane.
It's incremental ..so 1 gal toluol raises 89 octane more than it raises 92.

Klotz makes a "race gas in a little can" concentrate. Made to be added to pump gas to give the approximation of 98-104 race gas. I used some that a friend had once and had no issues with it (an outboard that needed VP race gas to keep from speckling the plug insulator with aluminum beads). Pulled the plugs and looked at them while running it and had no speckles. Then ran it hard and still had no speckles.
Can't remember what size container it came in but I think he said a 5gal pail of it would make 100 gal of pseudo race gas.

Jeff: Yes it is. There aren't too many high performance boats in Henderson Harbor!
I will also hope for good weather amd LIGHT winds. I had a sailboat at Sacketts Harbor for three years back in the 70s ... it can get pretty ugly.
Hope to see you there ...

here's the link to the concentrate:

Here's the link to the retail price sheet (which gives info on other additives and octane enhancers:

They aren't among the junk STP and other Walmart stuff. I don't know how much cheaper you can find this stuff, but I dont think my friend paid nearly that much..
On the flipside, are you SURE you need to worry about a few points of octane? Are you high compression? Supercharged?
If you are just blown, then stay out of the boost on the cheap gas (do you have an extra blower pulley with a larger diameter?). Or pull 4 degrees of timing out.
If you are high compression ratio, then you'll have to pull out some timing, or find an additive. Easy driving is still not enough to be on the safe side.
A Scarab buddy of mine had Banks turbo kit on his boat. He had it tweaked to NEED race gas. He added a 20-gal tank in the rear seat storage space. Added a valve to select which tank he was pulling from (started with a manual one, but ater switched to an electric switch that was kind of expensive).
Whenever he saw a boat that he planned on messing with, he would swap tanks. Then he'd let er rip. The motors lasted until he got passed by a bassboat while running off 87 octane. HE couldnt't resist and hammered it. He did catch the bass boat about the time he holed a piston. That is when he added the electric valve so he wouldn't have to stop to swap.
Motors lasted a couple of years till he sold the boat.

mcollinstn: Thanks for the information.
I'm running a stock 2000 502 Mag MPI with a Whipplecharger and larger throttlebody. I'll be running between 4000 and 4400RPM which is 63 to 70 MPH. I just Emailed Justin to ask him how much boost I would have at those RPMs.

Have you ever made any of their home brew? Just wondering how well the transmission fluid mixes in. I was under the impression that the toluol had enough benzene to act as the lubricant. And I don’t understand the mineral spirits either. Might make for a nice sales pitch if you were marketing a product but I doubt that small amount would do anything.
