You can take water in an engine, do this, and the engine start up and run (albeit with a heck of a knock).

I've pulled apart a few decent running engines with no noises that had bent rods. Doh !

Ok, rotated the cam and the crank incrementally and heard a valve slam shut. Bore scoped it and there is valve contact with piston, at this point I see no other option but to have the motor pulled and go through the heads.

Hopefully it's just a couple valves. The guides may be bad too, you probably know that.

Double check all of the piston heights if there is any possibility of water in the cylinders. I have see people skimp on that and then break a rod the next time out with fresh heads.
