Gary I checked that again and found nothing. But when I ran the engine yesterday I got another symptom I hadn't had prev. that has made it all clear. The motor was blowing black smoke, very rich, even at 4500 rpms. The link between #2 and #3 it that they are the front 2 cylinders fed by the upper plane of the intake and the port side of the carb. I think I have a sinking float that is flooding out these cylinders. I will be pulling the carb tomorrow. The floats are only 2 years old! I wish the damn thing had smoked before I tore everything apart!!!!

I swapped carbs and now it runs perfect. It hadn't occurred to me the carb could affect 1 cylinder while the rest were OK. Until it finally blew black smoke that is. Now I need to know what is wrong with the carb! The floats float, no leaks, needle and seat seal, lower body doesn't leak!! The metering rods seem OK. This is the weber/edelbrock/carter 750.

I may have found the problem. After checking how well the needles and seats seal, 10 psi pretty good, I checked the float adjustments. The closed position was pretty close to perfect but the open (drop) on the starboard float (which feeds #3 and #2) was 1/4" too low. This would only affect anything if the bowl was low enough to allow the float to drop that far. I'm going to adjust and reassemble it and give it a try.
