My mechanic just replaced one for someone this summer. Said he couldn't get the parts he needed to fix it from Merc. and finally just ordered a complete drive. The new drive was bad from the factory and only lasted 2 hrs behind stock power.
If it was me, I'd just get a new regular Bravo. They are a little stronger than last years model with the 1 1/4" prop shafts. If you've got bigger power, go with an XR.

The drive only has about 50 hours on it and it is only 4 months old. Most of the hours are easy since the lake that I go to the most has a 35 MPH speed limit. Since it is under warranty I don’t know if I can get them to upgrade anything.

Do you think with the economy being bad, Merc laid off their good help. Or maybe the quality control guy is on vacation.
At least you got 50 hours, mine blows the input shaft seal every 3 hours. It is 4 months old, but only has about 6-10 hours on it.
I'm not sure what upgrades you can get. What is it, an XR,XZ?
Good luck and keep us posted!

The drive is installed behind a 496HO. Group 1 Marine installed the motor and drive and the boat is currently at Alco Marine. According to Alco the upper unit was completely destroyed. It is a brand new drive 2002 model and is being covered by the warrantee. As far as for its life it has been very easy.

Very happy to hear it will be covered by warranty. Inquire about the new style seal retainer. Easy to tell if you look at the seal (barely visible) behind input shaft. The new seal is brown and there will be no green bore tite visible. This is sold ONLY on XR drives.
