I assume you mean small block engines with holes to the coolant passages??? - they need sealant. On BBC, the holes are blind and ARP makes a thread moly lube that works great - just run studs in finger tight, install heads, washers, nuts, then torque to spec

The Mark IV and earlier Chevy Big Blocks need to have the head bolts sealed. The Mark V and later blocks do not.
Bad-Habit,
Make sure you know what block you have before putting the sealant on. If you have the Mark V, or later block, use some heavy duty oil the lubricate the threads.

Thats where the problem lies.....ARP's instructions said to use their moly-lube or straight 30 wt oil.......STUPID ME just followed the directions....Im using the studs on a late-model sbc....

You gotta seal them up. I use the Permatex Aviation sealant. You can also use Liquid Teflon sealant. GM makes this type of sealant, it works great. I got a couple of tubes from a crate motor a while back and have been using it ever since.
