Mike Lewis built a pump gas 565 with the 300 Ovals and it made over 900hp. If you look at the flow numbers of the 300's they are right in line with the 335's all the way to .700" lift. There have been many cylinder head shootouts on 540's and the 300's out perform everything. I think for a low RPM marine build its the ideal head. I was seriously considering them for my 572's but they are a little pricey so I cheated out...

Many years ago a good engine mentor friend of mine "REAL SMART GUY" Warren "Butch" Elkins of Diamond Racing "Diamond Pistons" drummed it in my head V/E. V/E. We had many long conversations about all types of engine builds that he was involved with over the years and I learned so damn much, and he only scratched the surface, but I digress. He worked on my Cyl Heads, made me some custom pistons and hooked me up with Harold Brookshire "ultradyne" We build some 6k RPM N/A 502 engines using a relatively small HR roller cam. My point is this: I see guys putting together engines with some parts best suited for 5k RPM mated with some parts best suited for a 10K RPM pro stock engine.. Some guys get in the mind set that bigger is always better like a bigger cam. or bigger heads. or bigger carbs, or bigger intakes, etc. this is not the case. Volumetric Efficiency starts 4 ft ahead of the air cleaner, and ends 4 ft behind the exhaust tips.

Still gotta wonder how Jim v made over 784 @ 6,000 with a duration at basically same as 741 with more lift. Sure it's efi tunnel ram but still kinda funny. Most stay away from tunnel ram under 6k but....just something to think about.

Very good read , thanks for putting the time in to get this together. A little surprised the bigger cams did not perform better but having a 540 with the 741, ported 088's and a QF950 I'm happy with the results
I choose because of the split pattern with wet exhaust believing you have to help scavenge the cyl.and the poor 088 ex.in my case
