Thanks for all the info. So would I be correct in saying that when I sucked some debris into the drive it was the seawater pump that failed? Is there any advantage to running a crossover? The repair kit the the pump can be done with the boat in the water? or pull it out first?

David,
just a word from experience; if you toasted your impeller, check all of your down stream hose that goes to the coolers and such. These can become filled with all of the pieces and cause some serious problems afterwards.

YES, with outlet hose off of sea pump,
remove "seawater" inlet hose from
engine and backflush, usually, you
will find a few vanes of the failed
impeller will wash back out.
LASTLY don't mix up the hoses
when you install them back on
the impeller housing.
housing are labeled for outlet
per engine rotation, as far as
i know, most stern drive engines
rotate CCW or L/H, as viewed
from the rear.

Hey guys...one question....does a "closed colling system" like on the new 496 Ho and Mag have a sea strainer???
