Yeah, it was winterized properly. It did it last year as well and the mechanic didn't get to it...

As they say, you're just pissin' in the wind without a scan tool on an EFI engine. If you yourself were to purchase it, you could rent it out to recover the cost.

The guy that owns the scan tool on the block is everyone's best friend...

Judging from the sheer amount of boats at the marina that are all Mercruiser equipped I suspect I haven't stepped foot onto that block yet...

If I can't find the street I might have to become that guy...

Yep. Not my boat, so not my money. I'll see what my buddy wants to do though. I used to troubleshoot my old Ford diesel with a handheld programmer that showed damn near every parameter. Some good googling and common sense made it easy to see what sensors were faulty...

you'll need a scanner to verify but sounds like the neutral safety switch, it will not allow the boat to rev over 3000 or 3500 (I forget) if in neutral, it is adjustable and mounted on the linkage... once you get over 3000 you may have other issues if it has not been maintained properly.

markt111, that sound like it matches his symptom pretty good! I was not aware of that but my boat is old school. Poor running would be associated with running out of power to not GET past 3000 ish rpm. Seems something else would show up operational wise if it were mechanical related to power output.

Can you supply some additional info on the safety switch behavior? Wonder if he could just bypass or jump it to test? May have to do it actively as it might check for that circuit.

The neutral safety switch, if it were bad would still allow it to throttle up? I know it will not start in forward, unsure about reverse. But the outdrive is mechanical, not electric shift.
