Default 454 vs 502 Fuel Injection, etc...

Alright, as everyone knows and is probably tired of hearing about is me needing a 454 block. I may be looking in the wrong direction.

Does the 454 (7.4) stock fuel injection manifold etc...fit and work on a 502?

Would I need to change cams?

What else would I need to replace?

Many of you have helped immensely. I have a couple of decent 454 blocks to choose from, but almost everyone has suggested going to the more popular block the 502.

Whats the bottom line on parts swapping between the 454 and 502?

All parts swap within the same Gen family.

A 502 has more displacement and will move more air thru itself than a 454.

A 502 needs more cam than a 454 to keep the same rpm power peak, otherwise the peak will drop 200 rpm with the same cam and intake.

Peanut heads will work ok on a 502 with some inexpensive port work, but the 7.4 intake system will be on the restrictive side.

Anyhow, the good part is that a 502 with all of the same 454 parts will make more power and at a few less revs than the 454. BUT to do yourself justice, a freer flowing intake system would be desirable. People DO sell their EFI units off Mags and 500s occasionally.. A $150 Edelbrock intake and a $250 Edelbrock carb will make good power on a 502..

(a stock 7.4 cam would not be desireable on a 502 - many, if not ANY 114 degree lobe center hyd roller (since it is a Gen6) in the 220@050 with .525" lift would be much better.

Hey Kirk,
The intake on that motor is from a 502 mag. When AZ speed and marine re-did the efi, the stock unit was no longer adequate. That is why we swapped to a 502 intake. See that, Im savin you money already.
regards, mark

Default Thanks Mark . . .

I appreciate the help in saving me money....Seriously, thanks for the input, but I will probably stick with the 454. The motor ran like a beast with the camand set up it has, so why mess with it. Hope to have it ready for dyno in early Feb and in the boat by Mid March.

Wheres the pictures of your boat?/
