We ran an Erson JB100 grind in a motor similar to yours and had good results. It is a hydraulic flat tappet with 228/235 @ .050" installed on a 112 + 4 with .540" lift. We ran stock exhaust and had no reversion and the motor ran strong to about 5200 RPM.

Take your cam out of the motor and write down the numbers. Call Crane cams with the numbers and they will tell you exactly what cam you have in your motor. If the cam is not a crane then its not original. Merc uses crane cams in all hp motors. At least up to the Mark IV Big block that I know of.
