I have been reading about drive showers and am thinking about putting one on this summer, is it worth it, I have a 2002 5.0L M.P.I. with an Alpha drive. Simrek sounds the best. I am also thinking about thru hull exhaust, do you get any performance gains or just alot of sound? Which kind are the best? I am also wondering about engine oil, as I am currently using what Merc calls for, Quicksilver 25/40. Would it be better to go to a synthetic, different weight, something like Redline or Amsoil. Thanks alot.

quick answer:
1) Drive showers - YES, Simreck = good
2) Thru hull, naybe a little gain = check out stainless marine for the manifolds / risers..........they now have aluminum riser versions, a little more cost effective along with great service & people to help you, not sure how much hp you'll get, but it sure sounds better]
3) synthetic oil - many opinions on this

Ratchet, do you really think a 305 will see even "a little gain" with thru hulls. I'd bet against it.
It'd be alot cheaper to install the aftermarket exhaust bellows that opens up when you trim out. Best of both worlds, quiet around docks and more free flowing on throttle.

I bought Simrek's new 11 dump shower for both of my Alphas. On plane the upper gear cases have complete water coverage.
Thru-hull exhaust at the very least will give you great sound.
I use a quality SAE 40 oil in my small blocks. I change the engine oil and outdrive gear oil every 30 hours.
