pressure check it with the old dryer.
If it checks good, then blow the moisture out with nitrogen.
Have a new drier soldered in (along with proper amount of compressor oil) and new hookup fittings with shutoff valves soldered on the ends of the lines.
Have a full vacuum pulled on it, and dump around 40 psi of refrigerant in it.
It'll sit for as long as you want like that.
Do the same thing to the evaporator side.
You can then install both ends of the sytem, then blow the lines dry with nitrogen, connect one end loosely, bleed fresh refrig into the lines, tighten them up and open the valves. Ready for more refrig with no more vacuuming.

JUST DONT GET CAUGHT DOING IT THAT WAY. I WOULD LIKE TO BE THERE WITH A VIDEO CAMERA. iT COULD BE WORTH $10,000. You can't vent freon to the atmosphere unless all you are doing is purging your guages. The (soldered connections) need to be silver soldered or brazed. Do not use soft solder.
Why are you suggesting putting in more oil. If the unit was never inverted it should have enough oil already.

I've always cut open old driers and any oil that poured out, I've always added back to the new one. Is that wrong?
And you would Rat Out an OSOer for Ten Grand? I've lost some respect for you, Tink.
This guy's trying to save some money. Otherwise he would pay a refrig tech hourly on his reclaiming equip and labor to do it for him.
Hey, F31, be sure Tink isn't hiding nearby with a vidcam when you do anything to your unit.

Argg, marine ac place says theres no dryer on this unit, one can is the accumulator and the other is a strainer/filter. They say I have to install a dryer in the line after I evacuate the system. OK, fine. where do I find this and does it have flare fittings etc?

Use one that solders on.
Wouldn't hurt to replace the filter, too. Can use inexpensive universal ones.
I also see that you already have shutoff valves on the lines so you don't need to add those. See if they offer an o-ring kit for the shutoff valves and also replace the Schrader valves and O-rings on the check ports. Cheap stuff to do.
